Mamma Mia

This weekend I had the choice of seeing The Mummy or Mamma Mia. Now, as much as I love The Mummy, I decided I was in more of a happy, sing-y mood.

Basic Synopsis:
Sophie is about to be married, and wants to meet her biological father. After reading her mother's diary, she narrows it down to three men. She invites all three to her wedding, intending to discover which one is her biological father.

I've never seen the stage musical of Mamma Mia, so I don't really know if this movie measures up to it. (Has anyone seen it on stage? I heard it's very good.) At any rate, the beginning drove me up the wall. Sophie's friends are showing up to help with the wedding, along with her mother's. Every one is screechy and giggly and doing their special little handshakes and cheers, and that annoyed me to no end. So, for about 20 minutes, I hated it. But after all that happy reunion garbage was over, it got better.

The lead could sing, which is (obviously) a very, very good thing. It's really disgusting when they cast an actor who can't sing in a musical. A great example of this is High School Musical. *Shudders*.
Unfortunately, I thought all the men singers in this movie sucked. Well, all the possible fathers, at least. The best thing to be said about their vocal abilities is that they were on key. That's really the only good thing about their singing. Some of Pierce Brosnan's vocal sections made me cringe. Maybe I'm being too harsh. I think that I liked Sophie's boyfriend, but I can't really remember. It's always easier to remember the bad parts of a movie rather than the good.

Overall, I liked this movie. The songs were catchy, and it was generally enjoyable, but not fantastic.

(Note: I love this movie poster, as her neck seems to be abnormally long. It reminds me of the Lock Ness Monster. Which really doesn't make any sense. A giraffe would be a better comparison, I guess. Whatever.)

Ugh, I hated all the screeching, reunion parts too. :)

Wow, her neck does look really long! I didn't even notice that.

(To respond to my comments, it's okay to do it here. Responding on my posts makes it hard for me to remember what I said. :P)
